Bishop of Lodwar (Kenya) celebrated the 12 noon Mass on Sunday 25 September 2016

Bishop Dominic Kimengich of Lodwar, Kenya, whom Fr Fergus met in Nairobi last month (August 2016), celebrated the 12 noon Mass in Our Lady Queen of Peace on Sunday 25 September 2016.

Among other things, Bishop Dominic wished to express his gratitude for all the support our parishioners have given since 2011 to the Queen of Peace Primary School for Girls in Lodwar. Once again, on this occasion, generous donations were made for the project.

The bishop visited us briefly in the Spring of 2011 and we were very happy to welcome him back to our parish.

Members of the recently formed Parish Youth Group went with Fr James on a Year of Mercy pilgrimage.

They began with a Rosary visit to Our Lady of Dublin in Whitefriar Street.

A short walk then to St Teresa's Church in Clarendon Street, where it was possible to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Then across the Liffey to St Mary's Pro-Cathedral for Mass, to pray for the Pope's intentions and to gain the Year of Mercy Indulgence by going through the Holy Door.

Mass in honour of St Josemaría Escrivá, Saturday 25 June 2016 at 12 noon

This year Archbishop Diarmuid Martin celebrated the annual Mass honouring St Josemaría, Founder of Opus Dei.

The large congregation, which filled the church, included people of all ages and of many continents, illustrating the universality of the Church and the scope of the charism of St Josemaría.

In his homily (downloadable below) Archbishop Martin stressed the universal call to holiness and the essential role of lay people in the spreading of the "Joy of the Gospel".
"Saint Josemaría had a special gift in leading men and women into a form of holiness which would become fruitful through a life lived within the realities of daily life".
After Mass, Archbishop Martin kindly made time to meet large numbers of those attending, including many parents with young children, whom he greeted very warmly.

Confirmation of Benjamin Bisonga, Saturday, 11 June 2016

Warmest congratulations to Benjamin on receiving the seven-fold gifts of the Holy Spirit at his Confirmation in Our Lady Queen of Peace on the Memorial of St Barnabas. A native of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Benjamin began attending Sunday Mass in our church, with the assistance of the social worker at the hostel near the RDS he initially lived in. He joined our parish choir and continues to be a member, even though he now resides in Dublin 24.

Benjamin made his First Holy Communion in our church a couple of years ago and was prepared for Confirmation by Catherine O'Flynn, who was his Sponsor. Among the Congolese friends who attended were Fr Etienne Ntale, currently working in Belgium, some who travelled from Norway, and others now based in Drogheda and Sligo. It was a lovely occasion, much appreciated by the usual 12 noon Mass congregation. See photo album here.

We wish Benjamin well in his Leaving Certificate exams. He plans to go to Krakow in July for World Youth Day 2016 with a group from Citywise Education, based in Tallaght. The parish was very happy to facilitate a collection to help fund the wonderful opportunity for these students to be with Pope Francis in the company of up to a million other young people.

Students from Kianda School sang at 12 noon Mass on Sunday 17 April 2016

The liturgy of our 12 noon Mass on Sunday 17 April was enhanced by the beautiful hymns sung in Kiswahili by a choir from Kianda School in Nairobi. The girls were on a two-week exchange programme with Rosemont School in Sandyford. The previous week they made a much appreciated visit to St Mary's Centre Nursing Home nearby on Merrion Road. There they met residents in the Loyola House Nursing Unit and sang for them.

Words of hymns with English translation here.
(Note: Beginning of first hymn not in video)

Fr Fergus had been an assistant chaplain in Kianda for 2 years in 2004-2005 and it brought back many happy memories.

Diocesan World Day of the Sick Celebration, Our Lady Queen of Peace, Sunday, 7 February 2016

Our Lady Queen of Peace had the privilege of hosting the annual Mass for World Day of the Sick on Sunday, 7 February 2016. Archbishop Diarmuid Martin was the principal celebrant. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick was celebrated within the Mass and the Sacrament of Reconciliation and Penance was available beforehand. See Message of Pope Francis.

A very large number of the sick or people confined to home and their carers, from all over the Archdiocese joined the celebration, and we were especially happy to welcome those from our own parish and neighbouring parishes and care institutions in our local area.
  • Photo album here.
  • Fr Fergus' words of thanks at end of Mass here.
This celebration took place during the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy, when we are encouraged to perform acts that extend God’s compassion and mercy to those in need. One of the Corporal Works of Mercy is to visit the sick. On this occasion, we invited the sick to visit us.

The World Day of the Sick, inaugurated by Saint John Paul II, was first celebrated on 11 February 1993, feast of Our Lady of Lourdes. It's an occasion during which the Church throughout the world is invited to focus on her mission to give witness to the love of God towards all who suffer and their carers. World Day of the Sick each year is a time to pause and be in prayerful solidarity with the sick and with all who care for them.
