Fr Mercau, who arrived back in Ireland recently after his ordination last year, has followed an interesting path of studies. After school in his hometown of Rosario in Argentina, he studied history in UCD and later completed a PhD at the University of Copenhagen, where his thesis about the Falklands War was published by Cambridge University Press in 2019, before moving to Rome to study for the priesthood.
More recently he has been carrying out research on the history of Catholicism in 20th-century Ireland. He is based at Cleraun University Centre beside UCD.
